Curriculum Overview

The liberal arts education of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences aims to foster reflection on humanity and society.

The liberal arts education offered by the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences aims to foster thoughtful reflection on human nature and society. Our program takes an integrative approach, exploring human life and society through the lens of both the humanities – such as literature, philosophy, and history – and the social sciences – including political science, sociology, economics, and psychology.

By examining human nature as it is expressed through the liberal arts, the HASS (Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences) program seeks to cultivate the creativity necessary to understand and reimagine what it means to be truly human. Through this comprehensive education, we aim to nurture global leaders equipped with both professional expertise as well as a strong foundation in the humanities and social sciences.

About Humanities and Social Sciences

In the fall semester of 1999, the ‘Division of Liberal Arts’ was renamed ‘The Division of Humanities and Social Sciences’, marking a new beginning for our academic vision.

Our division is committed to providing foundational education in both the humanities and social sciences. Our objective is to nurture first-class and well-rounded scientists and engineers, who are capable of leading the 21st century.

The HASS (Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences) curriculum emphasizes the development of critical thinking, creativity, moral reasoning, communication skills, and pays special attention to substantial improvement in English proficiency.

Our curriculum is structured around both core and elective courses, dynamically intertwining arts and humanities with social sciences.

Required courses include academic writing, English language studies, and physical education. Amalgamated HASS courses cover ‘The World of Humanities and Arts’ as well as ‘Integrated Understanding of Science and Society’, while advanced HASS electives offer a deeper investigation of areas anchored to the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
